Hair loss is a common problem that affects both men and women. According to "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," by Roberta Wilson, if you lose more than 200 strands per day, new hair growth sometimes is not substantial enough to replace the hair that is being lost. There are a variety of home remedies recommended by alternative and natural health practitioners that are reputed to help slow or stop the loss of hair and to promote new hair growth. Consult with a health-care professional before using a home remedy to treat hair loss.

Essential Oil Home Remedies

Use essential oils to stop hair loss and promote new growth. "Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty," recommends blending four drops of clary sage, four drops of rosemary oil, two drops of cedarwood oil and two drops of ylang ylang oil with one oz. of jojoba oil to use as a scalp treatment to reduce hair loss. Rub the treatment into the scalp daily and let it sit for 30 minutes and then shampoo.
To enhance this treatment, use an essential oil shampoo daily. To make, mix 12 drops of rosemary oil, 10 drops of clary sage oil, eight drops of cedarwood oil and six drops of ylang ylang oil with eight oz. of any unscented shampoo.

Herbal Home Remedies

Various herbs may also be used to stop hair loss. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis A. Balch, C.N.C., recommends making a herbal rinse of equal parts sage tea and apple cider vinegar to prevent hair loss and promote the growth of new hair.
"Prescription for Nutritional Healing," also states that kombucha tea is thought to stop hair loss for some people. To make your own kombucha tea begin by boiling one cup of refined white sugar in three qts. of distilled water and boiling for five minutes. Add four tea bags of green or black tea and steep for 10 minutes. Pour into a glass bowl; do not use plastic, ceramic, crystal or metal. Add four oz. of newly harvested kombucha tea, or you may substitute four oz. of apple cider vinegar. Put a large kombucha mushroom into the mixure, cover with cheesecloth and secure the cloth with a rubber band. Store at rooms temperature in a dark, properly venilated place for seven to 10 weeks. Strain the tea through the cheesecloth into a glass bottle and refrigerate. Consume four oz. three times throughout the day.

Lifestyle Changes

Change your diet and lifestyle to stop hair loss. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," suggests adding more high biotin foods to the diet, such as brown rice, oats, bulgar, soybeans, lentils and walnuts.
"Aromatherapy for Vibrant Health and Beauty" cautions against using heat appliances and hair styling products. Instead of blow drying, gently pat with a towel to remove excess water and allow your hair to dry naturally.
