Herbal Treatments for My Kidney

Pesticides, toxins, certain drugs and heavy metals can all have a damaging effect on the kidneys. Kidney problems may also accompany disorders such as liver disease, lupus, diabetes and high blood pressure. A variety of herbs recommended by alternative health care professionals are reputed for their ability to treat the kidneys. Consult with a physician before using a herbal treatment.

Celery Seed

Celery seed has natural diuretic properties and is one herbal option for kidney treatment. Herbalists often use celery seed to treat high blood pressure and ease water retention. According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," celery seed can be combined with parsley seed to help treat high levels of uric acid in the blood. High uric acid levels can occur as a result of excessively consuming animal proteins. "The Healing Herbs," by Michael Castleman, lists diarrhea and upset stomach as possible symptoms of celery seed. Do not use celery seed if you are pregnant, as studies on animals suggest that celery seed causes contractions of the uterus.

Cranberry

Cranberry is another herbal option for the treatment of the kidneys. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" suggests drinking three 8-oz glasses of pure, unsweetened cranberry juice per day. Do not use cranberry juice cocktails, as they contain a high sugar content. Cranberry is also available in herbal supplements. Cranberry makes the urine acidic, which aids in preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria. Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to cranberry. However, it is considered to be relatively safe for anyone not currently taking medications that affect the urinary tract or kidneys or who is not pregnant or nursing.

Dandelion

Dandelion root extract is a third option for treating the kidneys. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" notes that dandelion aids the kidneys in removing waste more efficiently. It is reputed to be helpful in the treatment of nephritis, which is a kidney inflammation caused by toxins or infections. Dandelion has been used for its medicinal uses since ancient times, when it was used in China to treat respiratory and skin problems. Dandelion is a natural diuretic and is used in the treatment of high blood pressure. It also reduces water retention that accompanies premenstrual syndrome and congestive heart failure. Possible side effects include diarrhea, stomach upset and skin rash.
