Red facial skin is a symptom of a skin condition called rosacea. Rosacea occurs when the blood vessels beneath the skin's surface widen and cause increased blood flow. The blood flow increase causes facial redness during stress, anxiety, anger--even when you are laughing or embarrassed. According to Karen S. Harkaway, M.D., clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, rosacea affects people with fairer skin, such as those of Irish descent. Moisturizing the skin with certain creams can help minimize redness and constrict the blood vessels responsible for this disorder.
Step 1
Apply a chamomile-based moisturizer to the skin after cleansing. Chamomile calms the skin and helps shrink blood vessels temporarily to provide redness relief. According to the Mother Nature website, chamomile is a member of the ragweed family, so if you suffer seasonal ragweed allergy, avoid use of products that contain chamomile.
Step 2
Limit use of anti-wrinkle creams containing alpha hydroxy. Cut your daily treatment in half, for example, if the instructions on the package indicate usage twice daily. Apply it one time a day instead. According to Mary Lupo, M.D., associate clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, the acid content of the alpha hydroxy products should not exceed 2.5 percent in consumers suffering from rosacea.
Step 3
Apply a cucumber-based moisturizer after cleansing to relieve rosacea symptoms. Although the reason why this treatment option works is unknown, according to the Mother Nature website, it eases inflammation and fades redness while treating tiny bumps that form during flare-ups.
Step 4
Apply titanium dioxide sunscreen to the skin daily. Protecting the skin with SPF 15 or higher strength will eliminate ultraviolet (UV) damage and help prevent flare-ups. Titanium dioxide sunscreens are less irritating to the face, compared to other chemically enhanced sun protection products.
