Mass gain refers to one of the more common goals of those who regularly hit the gym. Packing on quality muscle and size takes time, along with a diet high in protein. Supplements, however, can greatly reduce the time necessary to gain mass if used correctly. Whey protein, weight gainers and creatine are all considered to be mass gaining supplements and are quite powerful when stacked together.
Whey Protein
The three main macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates and fat. Protein helps us to both maintain and build muscle mass. Although it is found in abundance in lean meat, fish and eggs, protein supplements still have their benefits. Whey protein typically comes in powder form. It can be easily mixed with any liquid, along with fruits and other ingredients, to make an instant high-protein shake. With 20 to 30 grams of protein per serving, whey protein shakes make for a great meal replacement if you're running low on time. Because whey protein can be used several times per day, look for products with a high numbers of servings for the cost.
Creatine
Naturally produced in the body, creatine is made up of the amino acids glycine, arginine and methionine. Creatine provides ATP, the main energy source of the body, directly to the muscles and can greatly affect performance in all types of activity. Creatine is also found in red meat, but only in trace amounts. Most types of creatine come in powder form, but pills are becoming more popular. Both forms offer convenient use. Creatine powder can be mixed into a shake just like whey protein. Because creatine doesn't need to be taken every single day, look for a product with very high quality rather than high servings for the price. Do your research and ask questions before you make a purchase.
Weight Gainers
Weight gainers provide you with a little bit of everything that you need to effectively gain mass. These supplements are high in protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and most importantly, calories. Many weight gainers contain close to 1,000 calories per serving. As with whey protein, weight gainers in powder form can be easily mixed with liquids to form an instant meal replacement shake. Other weight gainers, such as Muscle Milk, come in a ready-to-drink package that offers even more convenience. Remember that no supplement can completely replace a meal of real and hearty food, so don't lean too heavily on them. Look for a weight gainer with a good balance of protein, carbohydates, fat, calories and nutrients.
