Protonix is a medication in a classification of drugs know as proton pump inhibitors. It helps to reduce the amount of acid that is naturally produced in the stomach. According to Drugs.com, Protonix is used to treat erosive esophagitis, gastrointestinal reflux disease, and other conditions involving excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. There are some side effects associated with Protonix medication that users should be aware of.

Gastrointestinal Discomfort

Patients who take Protonix may experience gastrointestinal dicomfort. Symptoms can include stomach pain and discomfort, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, says Drugs.com. Taking Protonix with food or milk may lessen the severity of gastrointestinal discomfort. These side effects may be temporary until the body adjusts to Protonix. Small dietary changes may help to alleviate stomach discomfort and eating a bland diet with smaller meals and avoiding spicy or fatty foods may help ease nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Severe vomiting and diarrhea should be reported to a doctor because of the possibility of dehydration, which can be dangerous.

Headache

Patients taking Protonix medication may experience headache, says Medline Plus. People who experience headache should speak to their health care provider regarding the use of an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen for the relief of headache pain and discomfort. A physician should be notified if headache becomes severe, and is accompanied by dizziness, vision changes, muscle weakness, confusion, or numbness on one side of the body.

Severe Side Effects

People who are allergic to Protonix, or any other proton pump inhibitor, should not take Protonix without first consulting their physician. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Protonix can include a rash, hives, wheezing, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the tongue or throat. If left untreated, a severe allergic reaction could lead to respiratory arrest and death. Women who are breastfeeding should not take Protonix. According to PDR Health, there is a possibility that Protonix may appear in breast milk, causing serious side effects in the nursing infant.
