Miami is a busy international center with plenty of attractions to keep its residents and visitors healthy and fit all year round, including the month of January. With sultry, humid summer and hurricane season long gone, high temperatures range between 75 and 79 and lows between 59 and 64, which is perfect for getting active while enjoying the city's outdoor options.
Hit the Beaches
According to the Official Greater Miami Beaches Guide at MiamiandBeaches.com, Miami's beaches have been commended by the Travel Channel, USA Today and the Surfrider Foundation as top-rate. Even in January you won't want to miss out hitting the beaches, getting some vitamin-D-inducing sun, and going for a low-impact swimming session. You can choose from more than a dozen beaches in the greater Miami area, such as the family-friendly Matheson Hammuch Park Beach in South Miami, with swimmer-friendly uncrowded waters, or South Pointe Park, where you can see cruise ships on their way to sea. Make sure to apply plenty of sunscreen.
Play Watersports
If going for a swim or laying out in the sun on Miami's beaches isn't enough of an adventure for you, take advantage of Miami's wide offering of water sports. Go scuba diving in the artificial reefs around Miami, go snorkeling, rent a jetski, go kayaking or learn how to wind-surf.
Mountain Biking
Head to Oleta River State Park, the premier Miami-area park and the largest urban park in Florida, according to FloridaStateParks.org. The park is best known for its mountain-biking trails, 10 miles of intermediate-to-challenging trails and four miles of beginner-level trails, as well as a 3-mile paved trail, which is also ideal for roller-blading.
Great Taste of the Grove
Food lovers can flock to Peacock Peak in mid-January for the family-friendly Great Taste of the Grove Festival, a weekend-long free event with food samples from the Grove's array of fine eateries, high-quality entertainment and kids activities. Work up a sweat dancing to the festival's music entertainment and get ideas for your own home-cooking from the array of gourmet foods, such as ethnic delicacies, locally-inspired seafood dishes and even vegetarian options.
Go on a Cruise
Studies show that sunshine is good for stimulating vitamin D production and boosting mood, so consider catching some rays on a daytime cruise. Miami is one of the world's major cruise ports, with cruises arriving from and departing to exotic locales all over the globe, but the city also boasts plenty of local cruises and charters. Island Queen Cruises offers sightseeing tours of interesting districts while the Holiday of Magic cruise line offers yacht charters, day trips, cocktail and dinner cruises. Make sure to apply sunscreen frequently.
Go Dancing
Spend the chilly Miami January nights working up a sweat at one of the city's top-rate dance clubs. Enjoy a techno show at Cameo, known for its world-famous DJs, or practice your salsa moves at Bongo's Cuban Café, owned by Gloria Estefan and her husband.
