Molokini
Three miles off of Maui's southwestern coast sits the small, crescent-shaped island Molokini. A state Marine Life and Bird Conservation District, Molokini rises 160 feet from the water and is spread across 18 acres. The island is set among coral rife with over 250 species of fish, making it the ideal sport for snorkeling and diving. During the winter months, whales can be spotted from Molokini. Tours leave throughout the day from Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina, though morning is the best time to see Molokini.
Makena Beach State Park
Known locally as Big Beach, the Makena Beach State Park is nearly a mile long and 100 yards deep with golden sand. Wedged between two volcanic rock formations, Makena Beach, in southern Wailea, is a nice alternative to many of the more crowded beaches surrounding the island. The beach is protected from many of Maui's more intense trade winds, is ideal for snorkeling and provides direct views of Molokini island.
