Kyphoplasty is a radiologic procedure in which a balloon is inserted between vertebrae to restore them to their normal height and position. Then, bone concrete is injected between the bones to keep them in their correct positions. According to Supportive Oncology, kyphoplasty is indicated mostly for unrelieved pain due to compression fractures that are refractory to other therapies like pain medications, bedrest and back bracing.

Compression Fractures due to Osteoporosis

According to Radiology Info, compression fractures that result from osteoporosis are the main indications for kyphoplasty. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes a loss of normal bone mass and strength, which makes the bones increasing porous. Porous bones are full of holes and are vulnerable to breaking. If you have a compression fracture due to osteoporosis, ask your doctor if kyphoplasty is right for you.

Compression Fractures due to Trauma

Kyphoplasty may be indicated as treatment for compression fractures due to trauma such as an injury or an accident. Kyphoplasty is only indicated in instances of compression fractures resulting from trauma in the older patient. Supportive Oncology reports that kyphoplasty is contraindicated in young people with otherwise healthy bones.

Prevention of Problems Associated with Immobility

Kyphoplasty may be indicated in situations where you are likely to develop medical problems due to immobility as a result of vertebral compression fracture. Some problems that may arise due to immobility include the development of decubitus ulcers, commonly called bed sores, and deep vein thrombosis, commonly referred to as a blood clot. Other complications include decreased lung function and urinary tract infections. If you or your doctors believe that you are at risk for developing these complications, kyphoplasty may be a treatment to consider.
