The ocean city of San Francisco, California, offers a variety of activities for visitors, especially those with children. In the City by the Bay, visitors will find sea lions barking along piers, open green parks that are perfect for flying kites, cable cars and numerous interesting museums.

Theater

The ODC Theatre in San Francisco endeavors to awaken, delight and challenge its audience through dance. This makes a perfect activity to do with children in San Francisco.
The ODC Theatre opened in 1976 and has more than 150 performances a year with nearly 1,000 local, national and international artists. In addition to theatrical performances, the ODC Theatre offers classes for children, such as Morning Moves, Kid Dance and Little Bears Music.

Streetcars

San Francisco is famous for its entire trolley system but the F-line Streetcars will dazzle your children. Climb aboard and take your kids for a ride upon the F-Market and Wharf lines' historic streetcars and trolleys. These antique streetcars operate along Fisherman's Wharf to Embarcadero.
There are several famous streetcars running on these lines, including the No. 578S, which was built in 1885 and first operated as a sand car, the blue and yellow No. 130, which was built in 1914, and the gray and red No. 1, which was built in 1912.

Golden Gate

Although no trip to San Francisco would be complete without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge, give your children an a more rugged and playful experience of this national landmark by heading over to Golden Gate Promenade.
This is a 3 1/2-mile trail that begins at the Yacht Harbor and stretches out to Fort Point Guard Station. Sites along this trail include Crissy Field, views of Alcatraz, views of the Marin Headlands and the Fort Point Pier. Plan ahead and bring a picnic to enjoy near the pier. The path is dirt and mainly flat, making it ideal for biking, skating and walking.

Beach

The Aquatic Park Beach is located in front of the National Maritime Museum and is an excellent place to take the kids for a relaxing day out in the California sunshine. You can easily access the beach from the cable car system.
This popular area has places to swim, play beach volleyball and to just sunbath. Pets are welcome at Aquatic Park Beach. Also located here is the Aquatic Park Bathhouse Building, which is a historic bathhouse that was built in 1939.
Inside are walls of dazzling murals. In addition to a place to play games or swim, there are six historical vessels located within walking distance from the beach, ideal to offer the kids some additional entertainment during the day.

Museum

In a child's mind, an ideal museum is one that is full of hands-on exhibits that allow for her to interact with what she is learning about. This makes the Exploratorium the perfect location to take children for a day. Here you will find exhibits of science, art and perception.
Children will be able to learn interesting facts, such as how to use microscopes to look at organisms or how to throw a curve in baseball. This museum touches upon a variety of topics, which should entertain children of all ages and interest.
