Diet and exercise are the answer to effective, long-lasting weight loss and weight management. However, light to moderate exercise, including walking, bicycling, gardening, etc. generally will not provide quick or drastic results for most individuals. For rapid, steady, and noticeable weight loss, intense exercise--along with a healthy, low calorie diet--may be necessary. For weight loss to occur, you must expend more calories than you consume; thus, a workout that burns a large number of calories will be effective for weight loss. It is important to consult your physician before beginning an intense weight loss program.

Boot Camp

Boot Camp style workouts are a popular and generally effective method of weight loss. These workouts are military inspired and combine body-weight training exercises with high intensity cardio and plyometrics. Plyometrics were developed in Eastern Europe for training Olympic athletes, according to TeenBodyBuilding.com. They are also referred to as "jump training" and involve quick, short bursts of energy that spike the heart rate. Boot Camp workouts are usually led by personal trainers or ex-military and are generally held early in the morning or late at night. They often involve intense competition and challenging total body workouts. According to BootCampExercise.com, some participants have lost over 100 pounds after attending regular Boot Camp classes and changing their diet. You can find Boot Camp classes at your local gym, through a trainer in your area, or even on DVD.

P-90 X

P-90 X is a popular workout DVD series that introduces challenging, intense exercises. According to BeachBody.com, P-90 X utilizes an advanced training technique called "muscle confusion" which accelerates weight loss results by constantly introducing new moves and exercises so your body never plateaus and you don't get bored. P-90 X is a total body workout that combines weight training, yoga, kickboxing, or "kenpo," stretching and abdominal exercises. Consider that this workout series is performed in the home, and therefore requires much self-motivation and discipline.

Indoor Cycling

Indoor studio cycling is an intense, yet low-impact weight loss workout. indoor cycling is usually a class taught by a certified instructor in which each participant rides an upright stationary bike. The classes are generally an hour long and can burn up to 1,000 calories. The resistance on the bike is adjustable to simulate outdoor cycling obstacles such as steep hills, sprints, or jumps. These classes are often addicting, which accelerates results--they are low impact, easy on the joints, burn hundreds of calories, and build camaraderie between the class participants. This high intensity cardio workout is effective for weight loss when performed regularly and at a moderate-vigorous pace.
