Infidelity in the United States is on the rise, possibly due to opportunities presented by communication methods like cell phones and the internet. According to the "Truth about Deception" website, up to 60 percent of people in relationships cheat. It was once more common for men to cheat, but women are now closing that gap. Though there is no "one size fits all" sign of infidelity, an observant person may notice key behaviors that often indicate adultery.
Emotional Changes
Emotional distance is one of the most frequently reported signs of an affair. The cheating spouse may withdraw out of guilt or due to lack of interest in her committed relationship. This emotional distance is often reflected in conversations, shared activities and the sex life. She may avoid sex through numerous excuses. A cheating partner may also exhibit extremes in mood, such as depression, irritability or anger.
Changes in Behavior
A partner with something to hide often behaves differently than normal. She may attempt to hide phone bills or credit card statements, receive mysterious phone calls or behave strangely in social situations. She may stop inviting her partner to work functions or social gatherings, fearing that he will find out about the affair from someone else.
Changes in Routine
A common sign of an affair is a sudden change in routine, particularly the work schedule. Many people have affairs with co-workers because they spend so much time together. The woman may leave the house early or return home late, claiming to be working overtime. She may also go somewhere overnight or on weekends, using a work-related excuse such as a business trip.
In order to hide signs of the affair, a cheating spouse may shower or do laundry more frequently than before.
If a woman begins spending time with a new friend whom you have not met or heard of before, this may be cause for concern as well. Some women claim to be spending time with girlfriends when they are in fact engaging in an affair.
Changes in Appearance
The onset of a new relationship often prompts the adulterer to make changes in her appearance. She wants to look her best for her new partner and dresses and accessorizes to reflect the new love interest's preferences. Or she may simply see the relationship as a new beginning.
Changes in appearance that may indicate an affair range from subtle to drastic and can include new clothes, new hairstyle, a different style of makeup, change in hair color or new jewelry. The woman may also lose weight through a new diet or exercise routine. Some women even alter their appearance through plastic surgery or breast enhancement.
Other Signs
Other common signs of an affair include the appearance of items that may be gifts from a lover, like jewelry, flowers or perfume, as well as items related to the affair like a different cell phone or unfamiliar house or car keys. A woman may come home smelling of the other man's cologne or after-shave. She may even contract a sexually transmitted disease.
