If your hair is damaged and dry from coloring, highlighting, straightening, curling or exposure to sun, wind or chlorine, you need a conditioning treatment to nourish and moisturize your hair. You can purchase protein and moisture conditioning treatments for superior results, or you can do similar treatments at home with a few easy-to-find ingredients.
Over-Processed Hair
After months or years of bleaching, coloring and dyeing hair, it becomes stripped of pigments, causing the hair to become porous and weak. Use a weekly protein treatment such as Redken Real Control Overnight Treat to smooth the hair shaft. Apply the treatment over clean, damp hair, then twist into a bun and leave in overnight.
Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor can also help treat damaged hair. The protein in the product offers reconstructive benefits. If your hair is very fine, you can opt for the Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Liquid Reconstructor, which is a bit lighter.
ApHogee Intensive Two-Minute Keratin Reconstructor contains protein, keratin and beneficial botanicals to penetrate the inner hair shaft for restored strength and shine. This treatment revives overprocessed, chemically treated hair that is damaged.
Dry Hair
Dry hair can result from heat styling with curlers, straighteners or blow dryers. Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense is a rich cream containing silicone and lanolin to revive and moisturize damaged hair. You can purchase it for fine or thick hair, so it provides the right amount of moisture. This treatment intensely nourishes, detangles and rehabilitates very dry and sensitized hair, according to InStyle magazine.
Karite No-Rinse Nutritive Concentrate is a leave-in detangling spray that uses karite oil and vitamin B5 to naturally moisturize, nourish and reconstruct the hair shaft. It repairs and protects dry hair while straightening and softening coarse or rebellious hair, making it silky, shiny and easier to manage.
For a less expensive option, make a treatment for your hair at home. Avocado oil, olive oil and egg all have moisturizing agents that penetrate deep into the hair shaft and treat damaged hair. Mash together one very ripe avocado, 2 tbsp. of olive oil, a banana and one egg. Blend until the mask has no chunks and is the texture of cake batter. Avocado oil is packed with proteins and vitamins, and the banana and egg are both moisturizers. Apply one quarter of the mix to dry hair, and leave for 10 minutes. Shampoo and condition thoroughly.
Breakage or Split Ends
Too much brushing or a fragile hair cuticle can cause your hair to split at the ends. Coat the cuticle of the hair with a serum containing silicone, such as Umberto Beverly Hills Roman Oil Serum. Run a pea-size amount through the lengths and ends of hair.
While split ends can only be cured with a trim, a good temporary fix is Neil George Indian Gooseberry Treatment Oil. This conditioning treatment for damaged hair contains glycerin to temporarily bond the ends of your hair together and minimize the appearance of split ends.
