Camping can be a wonderful way to connect with nature and get away from the stresses of everyday life. No longer is your focus on emails or phone calls. Instead, you keep an eye out on the weather and consider what trail you will hike next. The camping supplies you need depend on the type of camping you are doing and your camping site. If you are backpacking off trail, you will pack lighter, carrying only the essentials. If you are in a state park, you may not need to rough it.

Shelter

Foremost among your supplies is shelter. Tents are rated based on the seasons in which they are best used. If you camp through the fall, consider a three-season tent, according to BackPacker.com. These tents may include a vestibule, which is nice to have when you want to take off your muddy gear before entering your tent. The size of your tent depends upon how many people will use it and how much you will actually be in it. A taller tent will allow you to change clothes comfortably, without having to lie on your back to put your pants on.

Comfortable Sleeping

A cushioned pad under your sleeping bag will make you more comfortable. Your camping supplies also should include extra blankets for chilly evenings. Comfort also means how you feel. A flashlight will help you feel more secure when things go bump in the night.

Cooking at the Campsite

Your cooking supplies may make up the majority of your gear. The more you cook in camp, the more supplies you may need. If you use a camping stove, you will need fuel. Likewise you also will need fuel and other supplies for cooking at the campfire such as fire-tending tools, hot pads, and other supplies. Some camping stores sell packaged pre-made foods for quick meals, requiring only hot water to prepare. This could be a good option if you want to cut back on the gear you need, especially if you are backpacking. If you are at a state park, you might take advantage of local foods.

Preparing for Emergencies

When you are outdoors, prepare for emergencies. Among your camping supplies should be a well-stocked first aid kit. Your kit should include bandages, antiseptic ointment, and alcohol wipes, among other items. This way, you can easily treat minor scrapes and cuts. You also may want to include antihistamine and ibuprofen in case of bee stings to reduce swelling and pain. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, you should seek immediate attention if you experience difficulty in breathing or dizziness.

Weather Preparations

Whether you are in a tent or an RV, you are certainly more vulnerable in the event of storms or other weather events. Sometimes storms can develop quickly. In order to be prepared, your camping supplies should include extra rope and stakes so that you can secure your tent. Your tent should also include some type of rain fly. The rain fly will sit over your tent so that you can leave the tent windows open without having to worry about rain blowing in. You also will want to place your tent over a tarp. The tarp will prevent leakage. Make sure to tuck the ends of the tarp under your tent so that it does not funnel in water.
