Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a behavioral disorder which affects 3 to 5 percent of school-aged children, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Symptoms include: not paying attention, avoiding tasks which require great effort, being unable to follow instructions or complete tasks, displaying forgetfulness, having difficulty sitting still for sustained periods of time and talking excessively. The conventional medical treatment includes medication and therapy. There are also a few natural remedies which may help.
Gingko Biloba
With a life span of nearly 1,000 years, gingko is one of the oldest living plant species. And, according to the University of Maryland, it is also one of the
best-selling herbal remedies in the United States and Europe.
Known as the memory herb, herbalists use gingko to treat mental health-related issues such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease. The University of Maryland also lists enhanced memory function and cognitive abilities, improved circulation, increased energy and improved vision among its possible benefits. John M. Dye, ND, researcher and naturopathic physician, recommends gingko in the treatment of ADHD. He explains that its beneficial effects are largely due to the natural glycosides in the plant, which increase blood flow to brain, bringing more oxygen to the tissues and improving brain function. He also notes that these benefits become more pronounced over time.
Siberian Ginseng
Siberian ginseng is native to eastern Asia and has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. Herbalists use ginseng to treat colds, the flu, viral infections, fatigue and poor memory. The University of Maryland describes it as an adaptogenic herb, meaning it helps the body adapt to the effects of illness and stress. They note studies which found that ginseng may also help improve mental function as well as quality of life. Dr. Dye specifically lists Siberian ginseng among herbs which are used to treat ADHD. The chemical components, called eleutherosides, are believed to help stimulate brain activity and improve memory recall.
Valerian
Although many herbal remedies to treat ADHD focus on improving alertness and memory, few are mentioned that address the issue of hyperactivity. Valerian is a flowering perennial that has been used in herbal and folk medicine throughout Europe and North America. It is a calming herb and has been used to treat insomnia, anxiety and nervousness. According to the University of Maryland, it is a popular herb because of its safe, gentle effects. It is less sedating than some of the other anxiety herbs, such as hops and kava kava, and can be given to children. Researchers believe it has an effect similar to that of Xanax or Valium, and therefore, should not be taken along with these or other similar medications.
