In their 2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook, the Bureau of Labor Statistics stated the overall job opportunities for registered nurses are excellent. Registered nurses are the largest occupation in health care, reporting a median wage of $62,450 in May 2008. Nurses can work in a variety of settings, from hospitals to private practice to public health. As of 2010, US News and World Report's latest nursing program rankings were updated in 2007.
University of Washington: Seattle, WA
The University of Washington's nursing program has three departments: Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems, Family and Child Nursing, and Psychosocial and Community Health. According to the school's website, it has been America's number one nursing school for over 20 years. The school offers bachelors and masters degrees, as well as both practical and philosophical doctorates. The school has 120 faculty members, 30 lecturers and 550 volunteer clinical faculty.
University of California: San Francisco, CA
This program offers a Master of Science degree, and doctorates of philosophy in nursing and sociology. With 155 salaried faculty members and 631 students, it has a mission statement focused on teaching, research and practice.
University of Pennsylvania: Philadelphia, PA
UPenn boasts a state-of-the-art simulation lab with mannequins to simulate real patient responses. The program has two divisions: The Family and Community Health Division and The Biobehavioral Health Sciences Division. They offer undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees, with extensive dual degree options and various specialty concentrations.
Johns Hopkins University: Baltimore, MD
Johns Hopkins provides the following degree programs: Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing. The school is organized into Acute and Chronic Care, Community-Public Health, and Health Systems and Outcomes.
University of Michigan: Ann Arbor, MI
With a mission statement that focuses on leadership, 90 percent of their tenure track faculty members have doctoral degrees. The undergraduate faculty ratio is 19:1, which improves to 10:1 at the graduate level. They offer undergraduate, master, and doctoral degrees along with post-doctoral fellowships.
University of North Carolina: Chapel Hill, NC
UNC provides a Bachelor of Science degree, multiple options for a Master of Science degree, opportunities for RNs to continue the education process, post master's certificate programs, doctoral degrees, and both pre and postdoctoral fellowships. The department has five divisions: Health Care Environments, Family Health, Adult and Geriatric Health, Research, Community Partnerships and Practice.
Oregon Health and Science University: Portland, OR
OHSU provides undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, continuing education and virtual education opportunities on five campuses and a virtual campus. Their mission focuses on lifelong learning and compassionate care.
University of Illinois: Chicago, IL
Biobehavioral, Health Systems, and Children and Family Health are the departments at UIC, with degrees offered at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level. They have multiple certificate programs, and combined degrees with the business and public health departments.
University of Maryland: Baltimore, MD
The school states it is dedicated to creating a research-intensive environment that advances the science of nursing. There are 697 students in the undergraduate program, 1,058 students in the master's program, and 127 students in the doctoral program. This program educates more than 40 percent of Maryland's nurses, and has 30 clinical simulation labs.
University of Pittsburgh: Pittsburgh, PA
This school highlights its faculty, 79 percent of whom hold doctoral degrees, and 41 percent of whom have leadership roles in national organizations. They offer degrees at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level, along with continuing education opportunities. Their intensive research environment focuses on clinical practice and public health policy.
Yale University: New Haven, CT
With a mission to contribute to better health care for all people, Yale only provides graduate studies. They offer a master's program with nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, nurse-midwifery, and nursing management, policy, and leadership specialties. The school also has multiple certifications and recently added a PhD program.
