Killing lice requires patience, regardless of the treatment you choose. Over-the-counter and prescription medicines may provide faster results, but home remedies can also kill lice if you use them correctly and consistently. MayoClinic.com recommends thoroughly cleaning the home, vacuuming carpets, and washing bed linens, stuffed animals and hair brushes using hot water to ensure the infestation does not return. If home remedies do not get rid of lice after two weeks of consistent use, consult a physician for further treatment.

Balsam of Peru

Balsam of Peru, a liquid resin obtained from the Myroxylon pereirae tree that grows in South America, contains anti-parasitic compounds that may kill lice and their eggs. In her book "Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child," Janet Zand suggest applying Balsam of Peru directly to the scalp to get rid of lice. After applying, allow the mixture to stand for about 30 minutes, and then comb the hair with a fine-toothed comb to remove the parasites and eggs from the hair shaft.

Anise Seed Oil

Anise seed essential oil has antimicrobial properties that may help kill lice. Andrea Candee, author of "Gentle Healing for Baby and Child," recommends combining anise seed oil with olive oil to make a lice killing hair treatment. Combine 2 parts olive oil with 1 part anise seed oil and rub into the hair and scalp. Comb through the hair with a metal lice comb after application to remove the lice and eggs, and then shampoo regularly. Repeat the treatment twice daily until the infestation subsides.

Essential Oils

Several other essential oils may help get rid of lice. In the book "What's the Alternative," Malcolm Clark explains that a combination of certain essential oils may repel and kill lice, making removal from the hair much easier. For best results, combine 20 drops lavender oil, 20 drops rosemary oil, 10 drops geranium oil, 1 tsp. eucalyptus oil, 2 tsp. tea tree oil and 1/2 cup olive oil. Rub into the hair and scalp, cover with a towel, and allow the mixture to remain overnight. The next morning, comb the oily hair with a metal lice comb to remove nits and lice. Use hot vinegar to rinse the comb between strokes. Repeat nightly for up to a week.

Meat Tenderizer

Meat tenderizer contains enzymes that dissolve the glue that holds lice eggs to the hair shaft. According to Theresa Roberts in her book "ABC's of Bumps and Bruises," this treatment makes an effective lice remedy. Combine 1 part water with 2 parts meat tenderizer, and then apply to the hair. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes, and then comb the hair with a fine-toothed comb to remove lice and their eggs. For extra killing power, add 2 drops tea tree essential oil to every 1 tbsp. of meat tenderizer paste. Repeat daily until lice are gone.
