The liver is a powerful chemical plant that converts everything you eat, drink, breathe or otherwise absorb into vital substances and eliminates the toxins, wastes and byproducts. The liver has an amazing capacity to regenerate after injury, but can become permanently damaged by cirrhosis, hepatitis and certain medications. Supporting the liver with herbs and supplements may improve its function, repair damaged cells and prevent further destruction of healthy cells.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle gets its name from the milky white fluid that comes from the leaves when they are crushed and has been used for 2,000 years as an herbal remedy for liver problems. It contains potent substances that protect the liver from toxins, including alcohol and certain drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), which can damage the liver in high doses. The active ingredient, silymarin, has antioxidant properties that stimulate the production of new liver cells and keep them from being destroyed by these same toxins. Silymarin also reduces inflammation associated with hepatitis.

Burdock Root

Burdock root, a member of the daisy family, cleanses and purifies the blood and liver, eliminating impurities and wastes, and improving liver function. Burdock contains carbohydrates, volatile oils, plant sterols, tannins, fatty oils and inulin, a natural dietary fiber. It has pre-biotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties that can improve health.

Dandelion Root

The common dandelion is also a valuable herb used to treat liver problems by increasing the production of bile and promoting liver detoxification. The leaves have a diuretic effect, the flowers have antioxidant properties and the roots are known for improving liver function. The roots may improve the health of the natural bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Drugs and Alcohol

The best herbs and supplements will not be effective, however, if alcohol and acetaminophen are not eliminated from your diet. They are both poisonous to the body, so the liver will expend all its energy metabolizing them, while its other duties are neglected. This results in hardening and scarring of liver cells, preventing the normal passage of blood through the liver.

Warnings

As always, common sense is required when taking herbal supplements, and they must be used carefully and appropriately. Even though most herbs are as safe as food, it's wise to check with your health care provider first, particularly if you already have liver problems. The active ingredients in herbs can interact negatively with certain prescription drugs and can place an additional burden on your liver.
