Razor burn occurs when the skin becomes irritated after shaving, and it can occur on the bikini line, the neck, the underarms or anywhere else you shave. Each time you shave, you may be irritating the razor burn again, making it even more raw and irritated, says Patricia Farris Walters, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. In most cases, razor burn can be treated at home and does not require the care of a doctor.
Shaving Habits
Shaving with an old, dull razor may be irritating your skin. Instead, use a brand-new razor each time you shave. Shaving with a single- or double-blade razor is the most effective in preventing razor burn, says Dr. Ezra Kest, a Beverly Hills dermatologist. Avoid gimmicky razors with more than two blades that promise a closer shave. Shave your skin when it is hydrated, so it is not as susceptible to tearing. Instead of shaving as soon as you jump into the shower, shave after your shower to ensure your skin is completely moisturized. Shaving with the grain instead of against it will keep your skin from getting caught in the razor, which may cause razor burn.
Shaving Gel
Shaving with soap will dry out the skin. Instead, use a lubricating shaving cream or shaving gel to help lubricate the skin and provide a layer of protection. Using a shaving cream or gel that contains aloe will protect the skin against razor burn, says dermatologist Evelyn Placek, M.D., a dermatologist in Scarsdale, N.Y. Apply a thick layer of shaving gel to the area you are about to shave and allow it to penetrate and moisturize your skin for about a minute before shaving. If you can't find a shaving gel with aloe, any soothing, moisturizing ingredient will help keep razor burn at bay.
Moisturizer
Apply a moisturizer after shaving to help soothe irritated skin that may be susceptible to razor burn, says D'Anne Kleinsmith, M.D., staff dermatologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. Using an over-the-counter (OTC) moisturizer may also help soothe itchiness and redness.
