Hair loss affects up to 30 million women in the United States according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Occuring as early as the late teens, the problem is most common in women over 50, with causes including anemia, hormonal imbalance, stress, and medications. It can be difficult to tell you are losing your hair unless you know the signs of hair loss.

Be Aware While Bathing

For many women, a normal amount of hair will detach during a shower or bath. If you see more hair in the drain than usual, or if there are large clumps of hair coming out as you rinse, it is a clear sign of hair loss.

Be Observant While Brushing

Look for more hair than usual on your brush, pillow and clothes. You can lose a great deal of hair before it becomes noticeable on your head; therefore, it is important to watch for signs of hair loss in the places it will accumulate. Areas to watch are your bathroom floor and sink area, or trapped in the clothes dryer lint screen.

Take a Closer Look

Because hair loss in women is more diffuse than men, you may not notice an obviously receding hairline or a smooth bald patch. Instead the hair thins across the entire scalp, which can be difficult to see. Use a hand mirror to look for areas of visible scalp on the top of your head. Ask a trusted friend to help you look for thinning areas.

Actions/Recommendations

Seek the help of a doctor. He may test your hormone levels, check you for vitamin deficiencies, or start you on medication to stop hair loss. It takes months before hair follicles to respond to treatment and of course, for hair to re-grow. Knowing what to look for and seeking help early can be the difference between stopping hair loss before it becomes noticeable and months of embarrassment while hair regrows.
