Ear infection in babies can be caused by illness or an underdeveloped eustachian tube that traps fluids inside the inner ear. When this occurs, bacteria can reproduce, causing infection. The eustachian tube normally drains fluids from the inner ear. Antibiotics are not the first line of treatment for ear infections, according to DrGreene.com. Repeated or severe ear infections may require medication, but typically home remedies are sufficient in keeping the baby comfortable.

Breast Milk

A lactating mother can use breast milk to help treat her infant's ear infection. A few drops of warm milk into the baby's ear can provide temporary pain relief. Breast milk has antimicrobial benefits that may help fight off the ear infection. It's often recommended that a mother use breast milk for chapped nipples or even baby diaper rash.

Warm Compress

Pain is the most significant symptom of an infant ear infection. A warm compress can diminish the discomfort temporarily. Wet a soft cloth with warm water and place it over the ear while the baby lies on her side. This can be repeated for the other side after 15 to 20 minutes, or as long as the baby can tolerate it.

Oil Drops

AskDrSears.com suggests placing one or two drops of warmed oil into an infant's ear to help relieve the pain of the infection. Good choices include olive oil, vegetable oil or garlic oil. To warm the drops before applying them to the ear, place the oil container into a warm glass of water for 15 to 20 minutes. Caregivers should test the oil temperature before using it on the child. Oil can get hot very quickly. Testing it is very important, because what is warm to an adult may be hot to an infant. The oil should be tested on a sensitive spot of skin on an adult, such as the inner wrist.
