Dermatologists can use lasers to remove scars, but that can be time-consuming and expensive. There are remedies you can try to help remove scars naturally that are easy and inexpensive. Remember that you can often fade scars, but they rarely disappear completely with natural treatments.

Aloe Vera

The aloe plant is known for its healing properties. Aloe vera gel is often used to treat burns and helps keep them from leaving scars. According to doctors at the Alford ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery Center in Texas, it can also help get rid of other scars. The aloe vera plant contains properties that decrease inflammation and make scars appear flatter. Aloe vera gels and lotions may also remove the redness of a scar.

Silicone

Silicon is a good option to get rid of scars. Patches and sheeting are sold over the counter in drugstores under brands that include Curad Scar Therapy Cosmetic Pads and ReJuveness Pure Silicon Sheets. They are an inexpensive option--compared to laser hair removal--and can help fade scars. A Fitness magazine article, "The Best Scar Treatments," noted that silicon sheets can even be used on wounds before they are completely healed to help keep dark scars from appearing.

Massage

Once the wound has healed and closed, massaging a scar is a good way to get rid of it. Dr. Robert Bernard, a plastic surgeon in New York, theorizes that massaging the area helps to break apart the bands of collagen attaching to the tissue, making the scar fade. To help this process work even better, try applying a scar removal ointment when massaging. Look for a non-prescription treatment that contains onion extract, which can help inhibit collagen formation.

Vaseline

Vaseline petroleum jelly is a beauty essential. It's gentle and can be used for so many things. According to dermatologist Bruce Katz, M.D., of Columbia University, it's also a good way to keep scars from forming. In the article "The Best Scar Treatments," Dr. Katz suggests applying Vaseline continuously to your scar. Begin doing this one week after the wound has occurred, after it has had some time to heal. Continue to do it until the new skin forms.
