Risks of Using Testosterone Cream

Both men and women with certain hormonal conditions can benefit from testosterone cream. Men with low levels of testosterone may be dealing with a low sex drive, hair loss and weight gain. Women experience a gradual decrease in testosterone levels throughout adult life, and some have a sudden drop in these levels due to having their ovaries removed. These women can lose interest in sex and also have loss of energy and a decreased sense of well-being. A doctor may prescribe testosterone cream to help with these symptoms. Some side effects and risks are possible with this medication.

Masculine Effects on Women

Women risk developing masculine-like side effects if using more testosterone cream than necessary, according to the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health. These effects are reversible when discontinuing the medication. Problems associated with testosterone cream use may include acne, increased body hair growth, scalp hair loss, voice deepening, clitoral enlargement and an increase in blood cholesterol levels. The Foundation notes that these side effects are rare if the woman uses the appropriate amount of medication. The risks are greater for women who already have severe acne, excess body hair or thin scalp hair.

Pregnancy Risks

Pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should not use testosterone cream, according to the Jean Hailes Foundation for Women's Health. Additionally, any woman able to become pregnant should use reliable contraception if using testosterone cream.
Testosterone supplementation can cause a female fetus to develop male sex characteristics, a process known as virilization.

Risks for Men

Men also risk significant side effects from using testosterone cream, as noted by Drugs.com. Some men will experience breast enlargement, tenderness or pain. Testicle size or shape may change, and erections may become prolonged and painful.

General Risks

Many general risks are involved with testosterone supplementation, according to Drugs.com. Liver problems are possible, with symptoms of dark urine, light-colored bowel movements and jaundice. Gingivitis may develop, with symptoms of gum irritation, tenderness, pain or swelling. Sleep apnea, or chronic interrupted breathing while sleeping, also may begin or worsen. Mental and emotional side effects can include memory problems, mood changes, anxiety, depression, hostility and suicidal thoughts.

Allergic Reaction

As with any medication, some people may experience an allergic reaction to testosterone cream. Signs as listed by Drugs.com include a rash, hives, itching, tightness in the chest, trouble breathing, and facial or mouth swelling. An allergic reaction to testosterone cream should be considered a medical emergency, as it could lead to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
