Although wrinkles are a natural part of getting older, there are things you can do to stop premature aging. Certain lifestyle factors can affect the texture of the skin and may cause fine lines to appear at a young age. If you do develop wrinkles, your treatment options include chemical peels, laser resurfacing, facelifts or injections.

Stay Out of the Sun

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most premature aging is caused by sun exposure. The amount of sun exposure your skin gets affects how soon wrinkles may appear. The sun breaks down collagen and elastin fibers that are responsible for keeping the skin smooth and wrinkle-free. To prevent wrinkles, avoid the sun when possible and do not use indoor tanning devices. If you are out in the sun, apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. It should be applied 20 minutes before leaving the house to all areas that will be exposed to the sun. Wide-brimmed hats, long- sleeve shirts, pants and sunglasses are clothing items that help to protect the skin from sun damage.

Sleep on Your Back

By sleeping in the same position year after year, the pillow marks may cause you to develop wrinkles. The fine lines may first appear around the chin and cheek area. To keep this from occurring, sleep on your back or change which side you sleep on regularly.

No Squinting

Making the same repeated facial expressions, such as squinting, can cause wrinkling of the skin. Smokers may develop fine lines around their mouths due to repeatedly pursing their lips.

Stop Smoking

Smoking causes chemical changes in your body that affect the texture of the skin. You are more likely to develop deep wrinkles if you are a smoker than a non-smoker, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Even if you are currently a smoker, quitting can improve your skin.
