Boys volleyball is a fun sport that can be taught to boys at all skill levels. Boys playing volleyball should be comfortable serving, receiving a serve and passing the ball to another player. At advanced skill levels, boys will also need to be able to set the ball for another player to hit. There are a number of drills that can be used to develop these important skills.
Serving
One drill that works well to teach serving accuracy is called "Around the World." With this drill, players are divided up into teams of two. The court is divided up into six sections--three in the front row and three in the back. One person, known as the target, sits in one of the six sections. The server then attempts to serve the ball in a way such that the target is able to catch it without the target having to stand and without the ball hitting the ground. Once this happens, the players switch roles: The target moves to the back line to serve and the server moves into one of the target areas. The game continues until both players have successfully hit the target in each of the six sections.
Serve Receiving
Another important skill is being able to receive a serve and hit it accurately to another player. The Serve Reception drill from Jes-Volleyball.com helps develop this ability. With this drill, seven players are used. Three of them, known as the hitters, are on one side. On the other side there are three passers and one target. The hitters will hit the ball to the passer directly in front of them. The passer must then pass the ball using either a forearm or overhand pass to the target, who will then hit the ball to the next hitter.
Passing
The "Hit the Pass" drill helps players practice their passing skills. This drill involves four players on one side, three of whom are designated as passers. The other player is known as the middle hitter. The coach will throw the ball to one of the three passers, who will then pass the ball forward to the center, where the middle hitter can hit it over to the other side.
Offense
In general, offense consists of a pass, a set and a final hit over the net. The "Set Set Hit" drill from Y-Coach.com helps boys practice all of these techniques. With this drill, three different players--termed the middle backer, the setter and the outside hitter--all are lying facedown on the back line. When the coach slaps the floor, all three players get up and begin moving into position. The coach will throw the ball to the middle backer, who will be standing near the center of the rear line, while the setter is moving to the net. The middle backer will pass the ball to the setter, who will then set the ball for the outside hitter to hit.
