Softballs are larger than baseballs and are pitched underhand. One of the most important positions in softball is the pitcher. Pitchers control the pace of the game. There many drills to help the beginning pitcher learn the skills needed to be an effective pitcher.

Learn and Practice Pitching Mechanics

According to pitchsoftball.com, beginner-level softball pitchers should "Learn, practice, and develop good pitching mechanics first ... do not worry about throwing strikes when you are learning how to pitch. Concentrate on learning the correct way of doing the pitching motion and delivery. Then later you can work on being accurate and throwing strikes." In this respect, repetition of mechanics may be considered a drill in itself.

Achieve Balance

Balance is important in the delivery of a good pitch. Balance drills help pitchers realize the importance that balance plays in delivering a good pitch. Softball-spot.com recommends a drill that uses a 4-by-4-inch plank, about 4 feet long, to teach balance. As the pitcher, stand on the plank that is pointed horizontally from the mound toward the plate. Go through your regular pitching motion finish the delivery while staying balanced on the plank. This helps the pitcher realize the importance of stepping toward the catcher, while keeping good balance. This also greatly increases accuracy.

Increase Speed and Control

Pitching from a longer distance is one of the most effective drills to increase speed and control. According to pitchsoftball.com, after you are warmed up, step back one step and deliver a pitch. Continue to work your way back by one step for each subsequent pitch until you can barely make the throw to the catcher, then start back forward, throwing from a step closer each time. When back on the rubber, throw 15 to 20 more pitches. If this drill is done regularly, speed and control will be greatly increased.

Increase Upper-Body Strength

According to pitchsoftball.com, the One Knee drill is used for increasing upper-body strength and arm speed. As the pitcher, face the catcher while kneeling on the pitching-side knee, with the other knee bent at 90 degrees. Keep the upper body straight and throw at least 30 full-speed pitches in this position.
