Hawaii's Big Island is almost twice as large as all of the other Hawaiian Islands put together. The number of things to do on or around the island is only limited by the amount of free time you have. To explore its vastness means visiting active volcanoes, swimming at pristine beaches, viewing marine creatures, playing at waterfalls and much more. Staying active and experiencing natural wonders are easy to do on the Big Island.

Exploring Parks

One thing you do not want to miss on the Big Island is the well-known Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You will see two of the most active volcanoes in the world that offer dramatic landscapes and insights on the formations of the Hawaiian Islands. Prepare to see land features such as arid deserts and lava tubes while hiking or touring the park. Many local businesses offer guided tours with transportation and food.

Beaches

Kolekole Beach Park is a jungle garden on the Hamakua Coast, where you can enjoy activities such as hiking, swimming and beach combing. Explore the park's nature trails that lead to waterfalls and streams lined with lava rocks. Onekahakaha Beach Park is another area to explore. Rent snorkeling gear or sign up for a tour to experience the waters and see the marine life under Onekahakaha Beach's shallow waters and tide pools.

Wildlife Viewing

Spot manta rays and Hawaiian green sea turtles at Keauhou, a resort area just south of historic Kailua Village in Kona. You can also see land animals at the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, including 14 native bird species and a Hawaiian hoary bat. Hiking the refuge allows you to encounter native plant species that are rare or listed as endangered species. The upper unit of the refuge is open to the public for bird-watching, photography and hiking.

Culture

Delve into the culture of the island by walking the historic Kailua Village in Kona, where you will find local eateries and shops. Stroll down and discover historic spots, including the Hulihee Palace and the Mokuaikaua Church on Alii Drive. The Ahuena Heiau is a reconstructed temple located on the grounds of King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. The temple was rebuilt by the late King Kamehameha and is registered as a National Historic Landmark.

Events

Attend the Kamehameha Day Celebration and the Anuenue Freedom Festival that celebrates the independent spirit of Puna in June. See the floral parade at the Kamehameha Day Celebration that takes place in the North Kohala towns of Hawi and Kapaau and enjoy the day's festivities that include floats, dances, food and music.
