Massage is the application of physical touch to stroke the skin and manipulate the underlying connective tissue and muscle. Long massage strokes first warm the skin and muscles, which brings blood to the surface of the skin, encouraging the elimination of toxins from the body. Manipulation of the muscles underlying the skin helps to remove knots associated with over-exercise and tension, easing pain and bringing a sense of deep relaxation.
Why use Massage Oil?
The purpose of using oil during massage is to lubricate the skin. The oil allows the hands of the masseur to glide over the skin, facilitating ease of movement and preventing the skin from being dragged or stretched during massage. Massage without oil would be very uncomfortable and may even cause bruising. According to MassageDen.com: "Friction, after all, can cause discomfort ... but more than that, the massage oil that the giver applies is very beneficial in itself. At the very least, massage oil moisturizes and nourishes the skin. The chemical content of the massage oil is also absorbed by the skin."
Essential oils can be added to a carrier oil to increase the benefits of the massage. There are over 100 such oils available, the most easily obtainable, and the safest of these, being lavender.
Choice of Oils
During massage, the oil is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream and carried around the body. Therefore, the choice of oil is important. If essential oils are to be used, then they are normally chosen to aid healing and recovery. Says the International Federation of Aromatherapists: "Oils can be blended by the qualified practitioner to suit the individual client's needs and problems. The synergistic effect of two or more oils working together can be more effective than a single oil."
For example, where the muscles have been overworked due to exercise, the aromatherapist might add a blend of black pepper, ginger and rosemary to the carrier oil. Massage with this blend warms the muscles, relieves the pain associated with stiffness, and loosens and relaxes the muscles, alleviating the stiffness and bringing comfort.
The After Effects of Massage with Oil
After massage, the skin feels warmed and glowing, improving texture and softness. The body is deeply relaxed, stress and tension reduced, pain alleviated. Massage with oils is also mentally relaxing. The sensation of touch from the masseur is both comforting and soothing.
Depending on the oils used, the effects may last for up to 48 hours. The skin feels sleek and soft, while the increased circulation makes you feel both relaxed and more alive.
