Breast fed babies may at some point during infancy use a bottle, to give mother a break, allow dad to feed the baby or to supplement with formula. While parents have dozens of brands of baby bottles to choose from, some bottles are easier than others for breastfed babies to use. In addition, some additional features that parents may want to look for include bottles that do not use plastic that contains bisphenol-A, BPA, a toxic compound found to cause harm to human and animal development, and those that contain additional safety features.

Avent

The nipple of Avent bottles are thought to be well designed for breastfed babies. The shape of the nipple mimics the natural shape of a breast, and the nipple itself apparently responds to the baby's sucking motion similar to the way that a human nipple does. This BPA-free bottle also is clinically proven to reduce colic via its built-in valve that keeps air out of baby's tummy. It also allows the baby control milk flow, which also reduces the risk of overeating and spit-up. All of the nipples and spouts are interchangeable with Avent bottles and cups.

Gerber Nuk

The Gerber NUK bottle is a favorite among breastfeeding mothers on the Circle of Moms blog. The orthodontic system includes a full range of bottles fitted with the NUK orthodontic nipple that are interchangeable for expanded feeding options as baby grows. The nipples feature the NUK air system, which simulates the feeling of the breast in the baby's mouth while nursing. Other features include the design, which reduces colic and promotes healthy teeth formation. Bottles are available in pink, green and blue.

Dr. Brown's

Dr. Brown's Natural Flow bottles received the "best" rating by Consumer Search. They are also a favorite choice for breastfeeding mothers on the Circle of Moms blog. They are made with BPA-free plastic and recommended by WebMD, the Environmental Working Group and "Parenting" magazine. Consumer Search users cite that the pros of Dr. Brown's bottles include the wide nipple that mimics the mother's breast, the venting system that prevents colic, and the large variety of shapes and sizes. The downsides, according to users, include the fact that the curved design makes the bottles hard to clean and that the bottles leak if not positioned upright.
