According to the Mayo Clinic, colloidal minerals, such as colloidal silver, are not only ineffective, but are potentially dangerous. Colloidal products consist of colloids or particles. These colloids, when taken as a supplement, are not approved by the FDA, and are considered especially harmful. The marketing of these drugs is considered a violation under the implementation of Act 21 USC 321 g1. Despite the claims made by some companies, says Mayo Clinic, colloidal products have irreversibly serious health effects associated with their use.

Skin Discoloration

Mayo Clinic describes a potentially harmful skin condition associated with the use of colloidal silver over months or years. This side effect is known as argyria, and consists of a blue-gray discoloration of the skin, eyes, organs and gums. While this does not pose any immediately dangerous health issues, it is irreversible, even after halting the use of colloidal silver. The FDA confirms this, and consequently classifies the use of colloids in food-producing animals to be a potentially serious health concern due to the possible residual presence of these particles in milk or meat.

Drug Interaction Conflicts

Mayo Clinic notes that colloidal silver may have negative interactions with several medications. These include but are not limited to penicillamine, quinolones, tetracycline and thyroxine medications. Because of this, it is important to speak with your doctor before starting any new supplements. This is especially important when considering the ingestion of non-FDA approved supplements such as colloidal minerals.

Neurological Effects

According to the American Academy of Neurology, reports were published on a 71 year old man thought to have died as a result of ingesting colloidal silver. The report states that the man fell into a coma after daily ingestion of colloidal silver for four months. This resulted in him having high levels of silver in his blood stream, leaving him in a vegetative state for five and a half months, upon which he died. The outcome of the study suggests that colloidal products including silver can cause negatively irreversible neurological toxicity.
