The Presidio remains to be one of San Francisco's most historic landmarks. Once an army post and now a national park, the Presidio lies in the heart of the city and is surrounded by many eucalyptus and pine trees, trails, lakes, campsites, restaurants, historic military buildings and homes enjoyed by the city's natives and visitors each day. Whether you are looking to burn some calories, take a leisurely stroll or simply meditate for a while among the calming surroundings, you will find that there are several healthy activities for you to participate in at this beautiful park.
Outdoor Exercise
The Presidio offers yards and yards of pathways and trails through lakes, forest trees and campgrounds for you to go jogging, walking your dogs, hiking, biking or kicking around the soccer ball. Walking tours are also available in the park, or you can tee off at the popular Presidio golf course located in the heart of the park. The 18-hole course is 6,500 yards long and surrounded by many pine and eucalyptus trees.
YMCA
If you have decided to do a five-mile run through the Presidio's trails but junior is not so thrilled to participate in the fun, you can take your child to the park's YMCA where he can interact with those in his age group. The YMCA offers many daily activities for youths and teens of all ages such as camping, aquatics and youth sports. This way both of you can have a blast and squeeze in a workout at the same time.
Restaurants
If you are out and about and suddenly catch a craving for a tasty bite, it is time to eat. You are in luck because the park offers many restaurants with healthy menus to choose from. Several of the restaurants in the park offer local organically grown foods, healthy sandwiches, salads, international foods and seafood.
Camping at Rob Hill
If you would like to take the family camping, the Presidio's Rob Hill is nestled in between beautiful eucalyptus trees and is the only overnight camping facility in San Francisco. Rob Hill is located at the highest point of the Presidio and has four camp sites overlooking Baker Beach and the Pacific Ocean. You can go hiking through the scenic, peaceful trails or simply meditate for a while, overlooking the ocean. Bring along some veggies and turkey burgers to throw on the grill.
Lover's Lane
If you are up for a non-strenuous stroll, you can take a walk along the Presidio's oldest foot trail: Lover's Lane. Beginning at Funston Avenue and Presidio Boulevard, this one-mile walk will have you passing over a small brick footbridge and through a trail of historic military houses from the 1930s.
