Herbal Remedies for Menopause

Menopause is the term applied to the cessation of menstruation and fertility in women. Women taking a 20 mg capsule two to four times a day for at least eight weeks or drinking a cup of black cohosh tea several times a day may offer experience some relief.

Dong Quai

Known by the scientific name of Angelica sinensis, dong quai is called a women's herb, as it treats symptoms of a wide range of female conditions, including those caused by menopause. Dong quai contains natural estrogens that help restore hormonal balance in women going through menopause. Women can take 500 mg of dong quai in capsule or tablet form up to twice daily, suggests Holistic Online, or one-half tsp. of dong quai tincture up to twice a day for relief.

Licorice

Known by the scientific name Glycyrrhiza glabra, licorice in its natural form helps replace estrogen hormones lost when you stop menstruating, according to Holistic Online. Licorice is also believed to help reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes when taken daily in 1 to 2 cups of licorice tea or by taking approximately 500 to 1,000 mg of licorice in capsule or tablet form daily. Licorice tea and supplements may be purchased at your local health or vitamin store.

Liferoot

Liferoot, also known as Senecio Bursas, contains natural plant estrogens that help restore stable mood and emotions for women going through menopause. The herb helps reduce the severity and frequency of hot flashes. Take about 500 mg a day in capsule or tablet form, suggests Holistic Online.
