Tourists and locals alike enjoy the active atmosphere of Alki Beach, located in west Seattle on a 2.5-mile strip of beach along Duwamish Head on Elliot Bay. The beach features picnic sites, fire pits, public restrooms, a rental facility and astounding views of Seattle. Health-conscious visitors will enjoy the plentiful variety of outdoor fitness and wellness activities.
Beach Activities
Alki Beach is well-known for its active lifestyle. Take off your shoes and walk along one of the few sandy beaches in Puget Sound. Engage in a friendly game of Frisbee catching, football tossing or competitive beach volleyball. Watch kids fly kites. Burn off some energy jogging along the shore or simply relax by taking in the views, sunbathing or people watching. Walk your dog on leash along the paved path areas; pets are not allowed on the beach.
Water Adventure
Take the entire family on a guided kayak tour along the waters of Alki Beach to search for seals, eagles and stray orcas. Rent stand-up paddle boards or sit-on-top kayaks for fun in the surf. Certified scuba divers can explore the Junkyard, an artificial reef composed of old tires, toilets and concrete structures that houses an amazing assortment of sea life such as sea anemones, crabs, sponges, eel grass, sea lemons, rockfish, sculpins, coonstripe shrimp, lingcod and octopus.
Wheel Fun
Whether inline or on quad wheels, Alki Beach is a popular destination for outdoor fitness wheeling enthusiasts. The two-and-a-half-mile stretch of flat concrete pathway beckons to most forms of self-powered transportation such as skateboards, roller-skates, scooters, recumbent trikes, Rollerblades and bicycles. Get the whole family involved with fitness and ride together on a surrey bike that holds from two to six people. View the vintage motorcycles, classic cars and hot rods that often gather along Alki Beach Drive.
History and Culture
Walk along the same shores as Chief Seattle in 1851, when he greeted settlers landing on Alki Beach. Take time to reflect at the small replica of New York City's Statue of Liberty. Explore the archaeological beach remnants of the 1907 Luna Amusement Park and the two-and-a-half-ton anchor discovered by a local divers club. Take a tour of the Alki Point Lighthouse or visit the "Birthplace of Seattle" Log House Museum located a block from Alki Beach.
Local Foods
Since 1935, Spud Fish and Chips of Alki Beach have been serving customers seafood, garden-fresh tossed ''seasar'' salads, home-style onion rings and breaded artichoke hearts. The Alki Bakery presents patrons a selection of local favorites including daily-baked breads, Challah bread French toast and Snoqualmie Falls oatmeal.
