One of the best parts of camping is being able to enjoy a good campfire meal. The flavor and taste of cooking over an open fire or even an outdoor grill is a rewarding treat after a day of working or relaxing at the camp. Your camp cooking experience can be stress free if you have all of the right supplies and equipment on hand and readily available while preparing and cooking meals.
Cooking Equipment
Make sure you have the right cooking equipment for whatever type of cooking you will be doing. Many people choose to cook over a tripod grill. Cooking over wood can give food a distinct smoky favor unlike charcoal or gas. This grill is generally portable and sets up and folds away conveniently. The grill has three legs that support an adjustable grate. The grate can be lowered or adjusted directly above the hot fire or coals in order to cook the food. Tongs and a hot pad may also be used to make removing food from the hot grate easier. The Family Camping Gear website explains that a gas or charcoal grill is often used by people who love to cook outdoors. A gas grill allows for portability and ease of use, especially if seasoned firewood is difficult to find. You are able to control the temperature better with a gas grill as opposed to a charcoal.
Kitchen Supplies
Your Camping Guidebook states that creating a checklist of all your supplies will help you stay organized before your trip so nothing gets missed. When camping, you need to consider that hot water may not be readily available. You will need the right kitchen supplies on hand to accommodate any cooking method. This starts with utensils such as a grater, chef's knife, slotted spoon, whisk, can opener, spatula, tongs, paring knife, vegetable peeler and colander. Don't forget plastic cups, paper plates and plastic eating utensils. A few mixing bowls will allow you to prepare meals such as pancakes and allow you to keep foods separated without having to wash repeatedly. Don't forget to bring along plenty of pots and pans as well as a cutting board for serving or preparing meats and vegetables. If you are planning on cooking over a tripod grill, bring cookie sheets and roasting pans. Campfire roasting forks and sandwich makers for over the fire cooking are also good to have on hand. Include a dish-washing tub along with dish soap, washcloths and towels to keep your work area clean. You may also want to buy some disinfecting wipes for additional surface cleaning.
Pantry Items
Making sure you have the essentials for every meal will make your cooking experience run smooth and your food will taste great. Utilize a list from Chuck Wagon Supply to assure you pack all the right pantry items. Aluminum foil, plastic wrap, tablecloths, trash bags and storage containers and bags will help simplify organizing and cooking. Have an airtight container full of spices and shelf items that you typically use when cooking such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, flour, baking powder, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. If you cook with oils, be sure to bring them in a leak free container.
