Reflexology, the therapeutic use of pressure points on the hands and feet, is thought to have been in existence for more than 3,000 years. It was practiced by the ancient Chinese, Egyptians and Greeks. Reflexology works on the principle that nerves on the palms and soles correspond to body organs and systems and that manipulating these nerves the right way can be therapeutic and healthful.

Maps of the Body

The reflex zones are laid out on the hands and feet like a map of the body. Says ReflexologyResearch.com: "Left foot or hand reflects the left side of the body and the right foot or hand the right side. The spine reflex area runs down the insides of the feet and hands, with reflex areas for the arm and shoulder reflected toward the outside of the foot or hand." The toes and fingers represent the head and neck, the soft area of the sole of the foot the internal organs, whilst the ball of the foot reflects the chest, lungs and heart.

Reflexology Techniques

Reflexology is performed on either the hands or the feet. The reflexologist uses a technique known as finger and thumb walking to massage individual areas of the foot or hand. This technique stimulates the reflex points that correspond to various areas of the body. The effect is similar to experiencing a full body massage and is deeply relaxing.

Maintaining Health

Reflexology is very helpful in reducing pain. It stimulates the circulation and speeds up the digestive system, helping to eliminate toxins from the body. "Sufferers of many diverse conditions have reported benefits from receiving reflexology; it helps for example, PMS, sciatica, sinusitis, aches and pains and digestive disorders. The list is endless," according to the International Federation of Reflexologists.

Effects of Reflexology

The most notable effect of reflexology is deep relaxation. Says Ali Headeach, a reflexologist from the British town of Margate: "Clients have described feeling as if they are walking on air after a treatment. Some even fall asleep before the end of the treatment."
Because reflexology stimulates the circulation and speeds up elimination of toxins, most people feel thirsty after a treatment and have an increased need to go to the toilet. This is perfectly normal. You should also avoid alcohol in the 24 hours immediately after receiving reflexology, as the effects can be increased.

Hands vs. Feet

Reflexology is usually performed on the feet because the feet are more sensitive than the hands, and it is possible to be more accurate, as the area to be massaged is larger than that of the hands.
However, for people with a foot or leg problem, or who are uncomfortable with having their feet touched, the hands provide a useful alternative. Older people in particular, and children who have difficulty keeping still, often receive more benefit and comfort from the therapist's touch on the hands.
