Overview
Racquetball is a sport that is played with a rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court. Unlike in tennis or badminton, the walls, floor and ceiling are legal playing surfaces, rather than out-of-bounds areas. The sport is usually played by two competitors, but it can accommodate three or four. If you haven't tried racquetball, you are missing out on a great way to get a good workout in a short period of time. It is a lot of fun, because the enclosed area gives you time to concentrate on the game instead of chasing balls around. Racquetball is a comfortable sport that can be played in cold or hot weather. Rain doesn't even interfere. But whether you are playing singles, iron-man or cutthroat, you can't play a good game unless you have a great racket.
What to Look For
Used rackets can be found for $20 or less. You can spend $70 or more for a great one, depending on your skills. The best place to find a racket is a well-stocked sporting goods store (although there are also many online outlets that offer dozens of styles). If you have the chance, experiment in the store with a variety of rackets. Find one that is comfortable for you. It is best to get one with a small grip, which allows your wrist more flexibility. Judge the quality of the handle by making sure your middle and ring fingers almost touch the bottom of your thumb. Rectangular rackets make it easier for you to hit a ball that is moving along the wall. A tear-shaped racket will have a larger striking area to make better contact with the ball. Light rackets will provide more control, while heavier rackets will increase your power following lengthy exercise.
Common Pitfalls
Be sure to buy a racket that fits your ability, whether you are a novice or an intermediate or advanced player. This will help you improve your skills and have more fun on the court. If possible, ask someone in the store for help, and be sure to tell him your abilities as a racquetball player. Become adept at your level of playing and then move up.
