San Francisco is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The city dedicates more than 17 percent of its geographic area to parks and open space. Residents and tourists can get around the city by walking, cycling or public transit. Named one of the country's top "green" cities by Popular Science magazine, San Francisco offers numerous leisure options for people who enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle.

Parks

San Francisco's parks offer something for everyone. Head to Lincoln Park for a stunning cliff view of San Francisco Bay or Aquatic Park near Fisherman's Wharf if you want to practice your open-water swimming. Golden Gate Park has more than 1,000 acres to explore, with a botanical garden and arboretum, Japanese Tea Garden and several playgrounds, including "America's first public playground" with a vintage carousel. Stop by the park on a Wednesday for free lawn-bowling lessons.

Tennis

Tennis lovers can get some playing time at one of the city's 132 free municipal courts, located around town at parks, playgrounds and recreation centers. The San Francisco Recreation and Park Department even offers free tennis lessons for children and adults year-round. If you want to play at a set time, reserve one of Golden Gate Park's 21 courts for a nominal fee.

Boating

Make the most of San Francisco's waterfront location with an afternoon or sunset boat ride on the bay. Enjoy a different view of the cityscape and scenic attractions from one of the many catamarans, sailboats and yachts available for rental. Pack a picnic and enjoy the breeze as you head under the Golden Gate bridge, around Alcatraz Island and over to the Sausalito waterfront. You might even see some sea lions and whales along the way.

Bike Tours

With its miles of bike trails, San Francisco is a great city to tour by bicycle. Many companies offer guided tours of the city. Even beginner cyclists will enjoy the 9-mile ride across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, since much of the terrain is either flat or downhill. If you don't want to make the return trip by bike, you can take the ferry back. Look for rental shops near many popular tourist destinations around the city if you don't have a bike of your own.

Farmers Markets

San Francisco is home to several year-round farmers markets. The Ferry Building Marketplace hosts a California-certified farmers market that attracts 25,000 visitors each week. Local farmers set up shop three days a week, selling fresh produce, meat, eggs, flowers and herbs. In operation since 1981, the Heart of the City Farmers Market at United Nations Plaza is open twice a week.
