Smart Shopping for Lacrosse Cleats

Overview

Lacrosse cleats differ from baseball cleats in that they are usually lighter and shorter and (according to wearers) make for better play during this rough sport. When you are picking a shoe, don't settle for substitutes. Make certain they are indeed lacrosse cleats, which can handle the sport's fast-moving action.

Lacrosse cleats are often described as a mix between soccer and football cleats. The shoe's upper fabric is typically made from either leather or a synthetic material. The leather helps keep your feet more comfortable, and is generally more flexible than synthetic material. It is very durable, comfortable and functional. Leather is more expensive than synthetics, denoting its grater durability; however, most shoes still contain some synthetic material, often to provide reinforcement or support. The material on the upper portion of the shoe is sometimes synthetic to provide a lightweight and breathable feeling. Foam padding may be used to offer ankle protection. Molded rubber outsole material gives great traction on grass and field turf.

What to Look For

When buying lacrosse cleats, make sure you determine your proper shoe size to keep your foot comfortable during play. As with buying any footwear, don't automatically assume your shoe size is the same as it has always been. It's hard for many people to believe that the shape of their feet changes over time, but it does. Look for a shoe that provides softness and high performance. Try them on and work them out a little bit, as you would any other shoe. You can buy shoes for anywhere from less than $40 to more than $100, depending on the type of shoe or your luck at finding the right price (which is usually online).

Common Pitfalls

Be sure to buy some extra laces. This prevents the frustration of trying to tie a broken lace together. Apply some protection to the shoes, especially if they are made of leather. Mink oil can condition the leather so it remains softer and more comfortable over time. It can also protect the shoe from the rain, sun and water. If you buy shoes with detachable cleats, also buy replacement cleats in a variety of sizes. A cleat wrench is needed to remove and replace cleats. The different sizes will give you more options when playing through different field conditions.
