The manufacturers of Biosilk's Hydrating shampoo claim it contains silk proteins and natural extracts to give hair a luxurious shine while cleaning it. There are 47 synthetic and natural ingredients in this shampoo designed to clean and moisturize hair and leave it feeling smooth and smelling pleasant.
Detergents
Biosilk's Hydrating Shampoo contains five detergents. Triethanol amine lauryl sulfate, or TEA lauryl sulfate, is a close match to the chemical sodium laureth sulfate, another ingredient found in this shampoo. Both of these chemicals are detergents that provide lathering and foaming action. PPG 5 ceteareth-10 phosphate is a soap that is also used in the manufacturer of some chemical pesticides, according to "Cosmetics Unmasked." Cocamidopropyl betaine is a neutral pH soap and surfactant derived from coconut oil. Tetrasodium EDTA binds to metal ions, allowing the other soaps to wash them away easily.
Moisturizers
Biosilk's Hydrating Shampoo has six ingredients to add moisture to your hair. Water imparts moisture immediately and grants the product some of its consistency. Cocamide DEA, or cocamide diethanolamine, is derived from coconut oil and is a thick, goopy substance that moisturizes hair. Glycerine is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls water from the atmosphere into the hair follicles.
Propylene Glycol is a humectant, while dihydroxypropyl PEG-5 linoleammonium chloride acts to lubricate hair follicles and keep them from sticking together for a fuller, healthier appearance. Sodium PCA, also known as sodium salt of pyrrolidone carbonic acid, is a naturally occurring humectant found in the human body, as outlined by "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients."
Extracts and Vitamins
Triticum vulgare, or wheat gluten, seems like an unlikely ingredient for a shampoo, but wheat gluten helps the product keep it's texture and consistency, according to "Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary." Not so unusual are the seven natural ingredients and extracts found in Biosilk's Hydrating Shampoo. Water from the flower of Rosa centifolia, or the cabbage rose, lends a pleasant fragrance to the shampoo. Symphytum officinale, or comfrey extract, has traditional use as a pain reliever and may be included to add comfort to sore or irritated scalp skin. Anthemis nobilis, or chamomile flower extract, acts much the same, soothing irritated skin. Mentha piperita leaf extract, or peppermint, enlivens and invigorates skin and hair, providing a gentle tingling sensation and a minty odor. Lavandula angustifolia, lavender, extract is purported to be calming and soothing, while clary sage, Salvia sclarea, extract serves to invigorate, as stated by "The Herbal Companion." Honey is a natural moisturizer included in Biosilk's Hydrating shampoo. It also has antimicrobial properties. Hydrolyzed silk is a modified form of silk added to strengthen hair follicles. Aloe barbadensis leaf juice soothes and heals, while panthenol adds vitamin B-5 to the hair. Keratin amino acid strengthens the hair, while phytantriol is an alcohol-infused compound made from chlorophyll, added to infuse moisture.
Emulsifiers and Preservatives
Methylparaben, glycol distearate, laureth-10 and propylparaben serve to keep Biosilk's shampoo from losing texture and consistency over time., Methylchloroisothiazolinone, diazolidinyl urea, and methylisothiazolinone prevent the formation of bacteria, fungi and other potentially harmful microorganisms. Cocamide MEA, or cocamide monoethanolamine, is synthesized from the fatty acids of coconuts. It is a surfactant, foaming agent and emulsifier.
Fragrance
Biosilk's Hydrating Shampoo is scented with eight synthetic fragrance oils and synthesized extracts. Gamma methyl ionone is a non-natural violet fragrance, while linalool is a fragrance oil extracted from bergamot. Hexyl cinnamic aldehyde is a compound isolated from chamomile, while citronellol is chemically modified from citrus fruits. Lilial is a synthetic lily fragrance and hydroxycitronellal is a lime fragrance chemically modified from citronellol. Geraniol is a compound isolated from roses, while eugenol is extracted from cloves.
Other Ingredients
Biosilk's shampoo contains citric acid and sodium chloride, or salt, two abrasive agents that allow detergents to clean the hair easier. The formulation also lists coloring agents Yellow 5 and Red 33, as well as a non-specific listing for fragrance. Biosilk's hydrating shampoo contains PG hydroxyethylcellulose cocodimonium chloride, an antistatic agent that keeps hair follicles from sticking to one another. Polysilicone 15 provides protection from UVB rays produced by the sun, according to "Personal Care Formulas." Benzyl benzoate is an antiparasitic agent included in the shampoo to stabilize the fragrance oils.
