Overview
Lacrosse players often wear helmets and eye protection, along with
shoulder and elbow pads. But the most important piece of equipment may
be the rib or chest pads. Studies have often shown that the protectors
can save athletes from serious injury, or even death, because the speed
at which the game is played can sometimes be fierce. A good chest
protector should have molded and properly made panels in the shoulder
cap and chest zone, often with form-fitting mesh back with heavy-duty
straps. They might have a belly and side extension pad so you can
adjust your level of protection. The shoulder and belly pad should be
constructed to deliver mobility and protection where you need it most.
Some players do not use a chest protector, because it is not always
necessary for some types of play. But the best wear on the field is the
safest, so getting a protector will keep your mind at ease and on the
game. Some players opt for the lighter shirt protector that has
many similar qualities, but not as many, as the chest protector.
What to Look For
Find a protector that is usable while keeping you dry and cool. It
should have adjustable shoulder and belly pads with protective plants in
critical areas. There are protectors with pre-curved hinge technology
to provide custom-fit body protection. The hinges allow for easy
movement and comforting fit. Venting should maximize airflow and reduce
weight. Some of the protectors are simply referred to as lacrosse
shirts without arm and rib pads. They are short sleeve compression
shirts to protect the shoulders and sternum. They are usually made of
lightweight, breathable, athletic foam that conforms to the body when
you stretch for continuing protection. Compression material should
support the large muscle groups to reduce muscle pulls and fatigue.
Good protectors should also be able to move with the body to avoid skin
irritations, chafing and abrasions. The protector should enhance heat
control, comfort and performance.
Common Pitfalls
As with many equipment pieces, you can find cheap chest protectors that
boast of being substantial. But it is best to avoid products at the top
discount departments stores, according to many athletes. Instead focus
on the many reputable sporting goods stores, both in your area and
online, to find the best equipment. A good chest protector may be a
little bit more expensive than a discount one. But it will last much
longer and provide the essential defense you need in protection on the
field.
