Los Angeles, California is clouded with celebrity sightings, large scale mansions and high-priced fashion, yet there is plenty more to the 'City of Angles' that is suited to those seeking an alternative way to see the city. Many of the attractions and exciting activities are geared towards the health-conscious and provide a great way to get outdoors and stay active.
Eat Healthy
A trip to Los Angeles does not have to include a lot of calories. Instead of making reservations for a pricey restaurant, be adventurous and venture out to Third and Fairfax and check out the Original Los Angeles Farmers Market which has been a staple of the city since 1934. Every day the busy corner bustles to life with vendors and sellers offering fresh fruits and vegetables as well as homemade cheeses, meats and baked goods. Explore your culinary skills while enjoying your meal outdoors.
Dig Your Toes Into the Sand
Get out of the house or cramped hotel room and head to the beach. The coastal city spans over 72 miles, of which 30 offer sun, sand and waves for travelers and locals to enjoy year round. Zuma Beach is the county's largest beach with the vastest range of facilities and activities available. Whether looking for volleyball courts, walking trails, playgrounds or just some sun and sand, Zuma beach has it all. Those seeking an added thrill can go to Pirate's Cove through the Zuma Beach trail and visit the nude beach.
Take a Hike
Whether you prefer to walk slowly, jog, or run, Los Angeles parks have a trail for you. Staying fit and active is not hard. Los Angels has many state parks which have hiking trails of all difficulty levels. The Lower Arroyo Seco is a 10-mile moderate hike which goes from the Arroy Seco all the way through the Oakwilde camp. According to 'Local Hikes,' the trail take approximately four and a half hours and goes through streams so it's advised to wear shoes that can get wet or that you don't care about. The trail has a picnic zone several miles into it, and features waterfall views.
Travel on All Fours
Embrace nature without the luxury of a car and see the city while sitting saddle-back. Because the city of Los Angeles has a many protected parks and trails, horseback riding is a popular pastime and riding trails are available throughout the city. Many horseback riding places will offer special packages, such as romance and proposal packages, moonlit rides or sunset rides.
Good Old-Fashioned Fun
While much of Los Angeles is glitzy and modern, there are no shortage of places that enable travelers to spend time outdoors and get a taste of Old LA. Visit the Santa Monica Pier where there are a wide variety of games and sports such as mini-golf, air hockey and skeeball. The pier also has a historic roller coaster and Ferris wheel for those feeling adventurous, and bike rental shops for those wishing to see the boardwalk with the wind in their face.
