The large Houston metropolitan area offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities. Many of Houston's numerous golf courses are some of the best in the country, and the various hiking and biking paths are a great way to explore the city. After a full day of exploring Houston, relax in one of the region's many spas, followed by a healthy meal at a cozy neighborhood eatery.

Golfing

The Houston metropolitan area is home to a large number of golf courses. Augusta Pines challenges you with its small greens, numerous water hazards and encroaching pines. The 18 holes at Augusta Pines are inspired by some of the well-known holes at August National, Pinehurst No. 2 and Oakland Hills. The course hosts the annual Champion's Tour Tournament.
BlackHorse Golf Club is considered to be one of the best golfing values in America. The 36-hole public/private course includes lakes, wetlands and towering trees stretched across a lush countryside.

Hiking, Running and Biking

The Houston Arboretum and Nature Center offers more than 155 acres of greenery to explore. Located in central Houston, the arboretum has five miles of nature trails that include forest landscapes, as well as ponds, wetlands and meadows.
Houston has more than 100 miles of hiking and biking trails, as well as trails for joggers. A 10-mile stretch along the Buffalo Bayou path was improved for recreational use, and three miles of hiking and biking trails outside of downtown also have been upgraded.

Fishing and Boating

Houston is only 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 30 minutes from Clear Lake. The gulf is a popular sport fishing destination for Houstonians. Offshore and inshore anglers can expect to catch tarpon, kingfish, yellow-fin tuna and wahoo.
The 2,000-acre Clear Lake draws boating aficionados from all of Texas. You'll find sailboats, yachts, kayaks and sports boats at Clear Lake.

Spas

Pamper yourself at one of Houston's dozens of spas. Bella Rinova Salon and Day Spa is an Italian-style salon that offers European beauty and leisure treatments. After getting your massage, let the internationally trained professionals at Bella Rinova give you a new, trendy hairdo.
The luxurious Fiori Spa is a 10,000-square-foot full-service spa retreat. Treatments include massages, facials, body scrubs, waxing, tanning and manicure and pedicure. Separate men and women facilities are included, as well as a courtyard pool and underground mineral thermal pool.

Healthy Eating

The Baba Yega on Grant Street is a quaint eatery that serves health-conscious meals. The eclectic menu features whole-grain bread sandwiches prepared with organic ingredients. Favorites include the smoked turkey with brie, the grilled vegetable sandwich with feta cheese and the portobello with field greens and basil mayonnaise.
The Canopy restaurant on Montrose Boulevard is a family-friendly neighborhood establishment. The menu boasts heart-healthy meals for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Some staple dishes include crab remoulade and heirloom tomato salad. All bread and pastries are prepared in house.
