Dull skin can be caused by a build-up of dead skin cells and the protein keratin. According to Lakx.com, as these skin cells and keratin build up, they cause your skin to take on a dull appearance. Your skin may also appear dull from too much sun exposure or being overly dry. There are several at-home and professional treatments available to help brighten your skin and get rid of the dullness.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is an easy and inexpensive way to get rid of dead skin cells and brighten dull skin at home. Some products you can use to exfoliate are facial or body scrubs, loofah sponges or at-home chemical peels. Exfoliating dries out the skin, so always moisturize after exfoliating. If your skin is dry or sensitive, start by exfoliating two to three days per week rather than daily to avoid irritating your skin.

Microdermabrasion

Dermatologists or plastic surgeons can freshen up dull skin by performing microdermabrasion. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, microdermabrasion involves using "a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin." Although you may notice a difference after one session, multiple appointments may be needed to achieve lasting results.

Laser Resurfacing

Lasers are another form of skin resurfacing that removes the skin's dull, outer layer to reveal fresh, younger-looking skin underneath. According to Mayoclinic.com, laser resurfacing uses an intense beam of light energy on the skin, destroying the outer layer (epidermis). The laser simultaneously heats the underlying skin (dermis), stimulating new collagen growth. This leads to smoother and tighter skin. According to Mayoclinic.com, laser resurfacing is an outpatient procedure, although local anesthetics may be provided for comfort.
