R-alpha lipoic acid is alpha lipoic acid in its purest form. Alpha lipoic acid, or ALA, is a combination of: R-alpha lipoic acid--R-ALA--the active isomer and S-ALA, the inactive isomer. R-alpha lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant with many benefits and is considered the "optimal form" of alpha lipoic acid.

Anti-Aging Benefits

R-alpha lipoic acid has anti-aging benefits. R-ALA helps protect mitochondria from free radical damage that can make cells less efficient and age our bodies. The consensus among researchers is that a decline in mitochondrial function is a significant factor in the aging process. By slowing mitochondrial decay and making existing mitochondria more efficient, you can delay or even reverse the aging process.

Potent Antioxidant

According to Dr. Lester Packer, R-ALA may be the "most potent antioxidant" and the "most important antioxidant ever discovered" eclipsing vitamin C, vitamin E, and Coenzyme Q10. Antioxidants protect cells against free radicals which can damage cells andlead to heart disease, diabetes and different types of cancer. Dr. Parker suggests supplementing daily with R-ALA will have potent antioxidant benefits.

Beneficial for Diabetes

R-ALA can be beneficial for treating and controlling diabetes, relieving the oxidative stress caused by diabetes by scavenging free radicals. It can also improve insulin sensitivity in diabetics and dispose of excess glucose, allowing diabetics to maintain healthier blood sugar levels. R-ALA mimics insulin and acts as a transport for glucose.
