1. The Mid Back
The spinal column is traditionally divided into three main sections; the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal segments. The mid back is that portion of the thoracic spine that lies between the shoulder blades and the beginning of the lumbar spine. This usually accounts for the lower thoracic vertebrae, the thoracic paraspinal muscles, ribs and the diaphragm.
The mid back area is largely responsible for mobility of the trunk. This area is typically less mobile that its cervical and lumbar counterparts. The rib cage is also involved at this level, so the mere act of breathing can sometimes aggravate symptoms.
2. The Mid Back Frequently Carries the Load
The mid back portion of the spine often carries the load for maintaining posture when there are associated problems in the neck and low back. Weak and out of shape abdominal muscles can exert a lot of stress on the mid back during activities such as lifting and bending. Consequently, pulled muscles in the mid back can be especially troublesome, because even breathing aggravates symptoms. Mid and upper back muscles are extremely important in maintaining an upright stance, and are constantly being utilized, even when standing still.
3. Other Factors Causing Mid Back Pain
If pain in the mid back region persists without relief for any length of time, it may become necessary to get a thorough evaluation to rule out other problems that may be causing the pain, such as liver problems, kidney problems, intervertebral disc related issues or even an inflamed gallbladder. These problems can all mimic mid back pain, so care must be take not to overlook these possibilities if symptoms persist or worsen.
4. Treatment Options
For many of the garden variety issues that plague the mid back region on a daily basis, rest, anti-inflammatory agents and perhaps even some muscle relaxant medication can go a long way in adequately treating the pain. If mid back pain is work-related, job modification, improved body mechanics and the use of a supportive belt or brace will decrease the chance of major injury.
In the case of poor posture causing mid back strain, core strengthening exercises can help restore the proper muscle balance and strength between the back and the abdomen needed for good posture and back health.
5. Take Good Care of Your Back, and It Will Take Good Care of You
Exercising good posture, body mechanics and proper ergonomics when lifting or pushing are essential to the maintenance of a healthy back. When mid back pain arises, get prompt evaluation and treatment to prevent long lasting changes.
If more formal treatment is needed, there are back "schools" that will teach proper mechanics and offer special rehabilitation for injured backs as well. Some physical therapy practices specialize in workplace evaluation to improve the work environment and reduce work related back injuries
