Matrixyl 3000 is a trademarked, synthetic peptide-based skin-care formula that is found in stand-alone and combination preparations. Sederma created both Matrixyl and Matrixyl 3000 which have similar scientific principles but different ingredients. Both creams are based on the idea that amino acids that form proteins in the skin can be used to modify the skin's natural aging process and reverse the damage.
Peptides
Naturally occurring peptides are found throughout the body, including the skin. These peptides are the building blocks for proteins that maintain skin elasticity and promote skin healing. The synthetic peptides present in Matrixyl 3000 are palmitoyl oligopeptide and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3.
Palmitoyl Oligopeptide
Palmitoyl oligopeptide is also called Palmitoyl-GHK or Pal-GHK. It is a short-chain peptide of three amino acids combined with palmitric acid. Palmitric acid is used to improve absorption into the skin. Palmitoyl oligopeptide's configuration is the same as fragments of collagen that occur when skin tissues begin to degrade. High quantities of these fragments are believed to trigger natural collagen replacement. Palmitoyl oligopeptide may increase the levels of these peptides in the skin and fool the body into remodeling the skin, healing and improving elasticity.
Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3
Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, also known as Palmitoyl GQPR, was formerly marketed as palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3. This synthetic peptide consists of four amino acids also bound to palmitric acid. Palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 appears to suppress interleukins production. Interleukins trigger the inflammatory process in skin that results in the skin becoming damaged over time, causing wrinkles and other age-related changes. By interrupting this process palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 slows this damage.
Other Ingredients
Other ingredients in Matrixyl 3000 include glycerin, butylene glycol, water, carbomer, and polysorbate-20. These ingredients maintain the consistency of the preparation, improve absorption into the skin, and preserve the chemical formula from breaking down due to time and mild temperature changes. Matrixyl 3000 may be combined with other ingredients in combination preparations and some preparations may add artificial colors and fragrances.
