Brain Building for Seniors

Exercise is not just for the body.

Baby boomers who had hoped to enjoy early retirement are facing some tough times. And with fewer younger people entering the job market, there is opportunity to continue working, even if it was not part of your plan. Staying in the workforce as you get older means that you have to keep your mind sharp. Even if you are lucky enough to retire when you wish, a sharp mind will serve you well. The good news is that, if you exercise your brain along with your body, you can effect an improvement in memory that can help you live a less dependent life. In other words, you do not have to accept memory loss as a way of life as you age.

Start With the Big Picture: Your Whole Body

Regular physical activity increases circulation, including blood flow to your brain. Six months' worth of exercise is reported to improve memory, decision-making ability and attention by 15 to 20 percent. Add a Mediterranean-style diet that is rich in antioxidants, and you are set to kick it up a notch by working out your brain as well as your body.

Teach Your Brain New Tricks

In general, doing interesting work, volunteering and staying socially connected are the best overall approaches to take. Such activities counter depression and isolation, which seem to slow down the brain over time.

Some companies have developed online or software-based video games that require the user to memorize information, on which he is then tested. This is an informal version of the more scientific and professional testing method called “cognitive training." Most of the gaming ideas were developed from children's educational games like Baby Einstein. Alternatives to these games include learning a new language, doing crossword puzzles or trying a new hobby. Brain exercises are more visual than physical, so try something that makes you think instead of burning calories on a treadmill or bicycle.Twenty minutes of brain calisthenics per day should show results in 6 months or so. Some researchers have found that the effects last as long as 5 years.
