What Are Symptoms of Chlamydia in Men?

Caused by a bacterium called Chlamydia trachomatis, chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease, according to the MayoClinic.com. MedlinePlus points out that about 25 percent of men who have chlamydia do not show symptoms. If men do have symptoms of chlamydia, they depend on where in the body the infection occurs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that symptoms can start within one to three weeks after the man comes in contact with an infection person.

Discharge

Men with chlamydia can have discharge from the penis or rectum, if they engage in anal sex. Planned Parenthood points that this discharge can be pus or it can be watery or milky. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that men may have diarrhea in addition to the discharge from the rectum.

Swelling

Swelling can occur in the genital regions affected by the chlamydia infection. For example, some men can have swollen testicles. Planned Parenthood explains that the swollen testicles can become tender. Swelling can also occur around the anus. Pain can occur with the swelling in both genital regions.

Burning Sensation

MedlinePlus explains that men with chlamydia may have a burning sensation when they urinate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention adds that a burning sensation can also occur around the opening of the penis. Some men may have itching at the opening of the penis, instead.

Bleeding

If the man has the chlamydia infection in his rectum, he can experience bleeding in that region, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Itching may occur around the rectum, as well.

Other Symptoms

Chlamydia can result in different symptoms when it affects other areas of the body. For example, some men may have the chlamydia infection in their throats as a result of oral sex with a chlamydia-infected partner. An infection in the throat can also result in soreness. Planned Parenthood notes that men can also have a chlamydia infection in their eyes. If this occurs, it can cause redness, as well as discharge and itching.
