Loudonville isn't the biggest place in Ohio. In fact, it's the state's 803rd largest city, township or village, with just over 3,000 residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Despite its small size, the village attracts its share of outdoor lovers to the Mohican State Park and the adjacent Mohican-Memorial State Forest in north-central Ohio. Visitors can also see what life was like for earlier generations.

Biking

Bikers of varying skill levels will enjoy the 25-mile trail going through the Mohican State Park and the Mohican-Memorial State Forest. Some of the terrain is rocky and geared toward experienced mountain bikers. The trail passes by camping areas, restrooms and water stations.

Grist Mill

Visitors to Loudonville can gain an appreciation for the past by visiting the Wolf Creek/Pine Run Grist Mill. It features a restored working saw mill built around 1831 and an 1815 log cabin welcome center. Additionally, the venue has events throughout the year. Pioneer Days at the Mill in the spring features an encampment and crafts from the 1800s. In the fall, Colonial Soldiers Weekend has an 18th-century battle recreation and soldiers in period pieces.

Hiking

Hikers get a workout while enjoying the environment in Loudonville. The Mohican State Park has 13 miles of trails that feature both hilly and flat terrain. You can observe the Big Lyons Falls and the Little Lyons Falls. Another path takes you from the Mohican River's Clear Fork to the Pleasant Hill Dam's gorge. The Mohican-Memorial State Forest has 32 miles of more trails. Visitors can see the Discovery Forest, which has demonstrations of timber harvesting and forest management practices.

Street Fair

The Loudonville Free Street Fair has been a staple in the area since 1888. The fall fair brings together the community with livestock shows, tractor pulls, auctions, rides and entertainment like music concerts. As a bonus, the fair has free admission with the attractions also having no charge.

Ultra Marathon

Running a traditional marathon of 26 miles is no big deal compared to the annual Mohican Trail 100 Mile Run. The ultra marathon attracts international runners for its 100-mile course spread throughout the Mohican State Park and Loudonville area. It has acted as the race for the USA Track and Field's 100-mile championship. Even if you're not running, you can come out to support the elite athletes competing. The race is typically held in June.
