Astragalus root is an herb that historically has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. Its purported uses include treating HIV and AIDS, diabetes, heart disease, colds, infections and the side effects of chemotherapy, according to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Astragalus can be taken safely by most people. However, the extent of possible side effects may not yet be widely known because it is often taken along with other herbs, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Immune Suppression
Astragalus root may suppress the immune system. Because of this, it is not safe for people who are taking immune-suppressing drugs such as those used in chemotherapy or given to people who have undergone an organ transplant, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Gastrointestinal Distress
Some people taking supplements containing astragalus root may experience mild gastrointestinal distress such as nausea or an upset stomach, according to Drugs.com. Diarrhea is also possible, and it is usually no cause for concern. However, if you experience black or bloody stools or suddenly cannot have a bowel movement you should seek immediate medical attention. Severe abdominal pain or cramping should also be reported to your doctor.
Bloating
Another known side effect of astragalus root is abdominal bloating, including flatulence and belching, according to Drugs.com. These side effects are no cause for concern, however.
Trouble Swallowing
If you suddenly have difficulty swallowing after using supplements containing astragalus root, Drugs.com advises immediately contacting your doctor. This should be a sign of a potentially serious reaction requiring prompt medical attention.
Allergic Reactions
As with other supplements and drugs, people consuming astragalus root may in rare cases develop a severe allergic reaction. Common signs of severe reactions include wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and mouth and hives or other skin rashes.
