Things to Do in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Atlantic City is on Absecon Island off the Atlantic coast in New Jersey. The seaside resort, famous for the world's first boardwalk, casinos, saltwater taffy and street names present on the Monopoly game board, offers a host of exciting activities and attractions. The whole family can enjoy a vacation in Atlantic City.

Beaches

Don't want to spend a lot of money? Spend the day at one of Atlantic City's beaches, where you don't have to pay to enjoy activities such as swimming, metal detecting, sunbathing, boogie boarding or beach volleyball. Ride the waves as you surf or take surfing lessons at Crystal Beach on New Hampshire Avenue, Delaware Avenue Beach or Downtown Beach at Raleigh Avenue. Go kayaking and windsurfing at the Jackson Avenue Beach, which is especially designated for these two activities only.

Parades

Follow the Atlantic City Summer Solstice Parade as it makes its way from New York Avenue to Albany Avenue. Held in June, the parade is free and features colorful floats, costumed ensembles and a movie on the beach. Watch The Show at Showboat parade, a combination of a New Orleans-inspired and Rio Carnivale-inspired parade featuring dancers, singers, musicians and acrobats. Three nightly parades are free and scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday.

Museums and Sites

See Miss America memorabilia, a collection of sand art and watch the historical video, "Boardwalk Ballyhoo: The Magic of Atlantic City" at the Atlantic City Historical Museum, where admission is free. At the Noyes Museum of Art, which is open daily except for major holidays, view exhibits of fine art, crafts and folk art from New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic Region participate in educational programs. From July through August, visit one of the oldest lighthouses in the country and New Jersey's tallest lighthouse, Absecon Lighthouse. Ascend the lighthouse's 228 steps for views of Atlantic City's skyline or schedule a weekend sleepover. From September through June, the lighthouse is open from Thursday to Monday.

Spas

Pamper yourself in one of Atlantic City's spas that offer a range of invigorating treatments. Get hair, skin and nail treatments in Bellezza Salon at Bally's Atlantic City or enjoy a relaxing, professional massage or use the sauna, steam room, hot tub and indoor swimming pool in Serene Blü Spa at Hilton Casino Resort. At Trump's Taj Mahal Casino Resort, you can receive a Swedish, aromatherapy or couple's massage, hot stone therapy or a reflexology treatment.

Shopping and Dining

Shopping in Atlantic City offers high-end retails stores to brand-name discount outlets. You can find Atlantic City memorabilia to clothing stores. The Pier Shops at Caesars, a 464,000 square foot retail and dining destination, features exclusive retail shops such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Dine in an elegant Chinese restaurant, Buddakan, or an eclectic bistro and lounge, Sonsie. In The Quarter at Tropicana, shop in stores such as Houdini's Magic Shop and Chez Lingerie. Enjoy a meal in Cuba Libre, a restaurant featuring Latin floorshows and salsa dancing, and in FIN, a seafood restaurant.
